Every Fib Fact question comes with an answer. Your job is to decide whether that answer is a fib (false) or a fact (true). This guide covers everything from your first game to hosting an online match.
In this guide
Quick start
- Go to the home page and choose Same device or Play online.
- Pick a difficulty: Easy, Medium or Hard.
- Read the question and the answer underneath it, then tap Fib or Fact.
- Watch the logo spin. The half that spins is the truth, and if it was a fib, the real answer appears below.
- After ten questions you’ll see the final scores. Tap Play again for a fresh set.
Choosing a difficulty
| Level | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Easy | Everyday general knowledge. The fibs are usually clearly wrong, so it’s good for younger players and warm-ups. |
| Medium | School-level facts with believable near-misses, such as Sydney for the capital of Australia. |
| Hard | Popular myths and surprising truths. Expect answers that sound right but aren’t, and true ones that sound made up. |
Questions are picked at random for each game, so no two games are quite the same.
Playing on one device
Same-device mode is for one to four people sharing a single phone, tablet or computer.
- Choose Same device on the home page.
- Choose how many players (1–4) and type everyone’s names. Names are optional; blank ones become “Player 1”, “Player 2” and so on.
- Pick a difficulty and tap Start game.
- Players take turns. The banner above the logo shows whose turn it is (for example “Sam’s turn”), and their score is outlined at the top.
- After each answer, tap Next question and pass the device on.
Each player normally gets ten questions. At the end you can open Review answers to go back over every question, who answered it and what the truth was.
Playing online with friends
Online mode lets two or more people play together on their own devices, whether they’re in the same room or miles apart. One person hosts the game and everyone else joins with a game code.
Hosting a game
- Choose Play online and type your name.
- Pick a difficulty and tap Create game.
- You’ll see a five-character game code, such as K7QPX. Every live game has its own code.
- Read the code out, or tap Copy invite link and send the link by message. Anyone who opens the link gets the code filled in for them.
- Players appear in the list as they join. A green dot means they’re connected. When at least two of you are in, tap Start game.
Joining a game
- Open the invite link, or go to the home page and choose Play online.
- Type your name and the game code (upper or lower case is fine), then tap Join.
- Wait in the lobby until the host starts the game.
If someone in the game already has your name, you’ll get a number added, for example “Sam 2”. You can’t join a game once it has started, so ask the host to wait for you.
Answering
- Everyone sees the same question at the same time and answers on their own device.
- A timer bar counts down, usually from 20 seconds. It turns red for the last five.
- Once you’ve answered, your choice is locked in and you’ll see how many others have answered. A ✓ appears next to each player who has.
- Nobody can see whether anyone else was right until the reveal, so there’s no copying.
The reveal
As soon as everyone has answered, or the timer runs out, the logo spins to show the truth. You’ll see whether you were right (or “Too slow!” if you didn’t answer), the real answer for fibs, and what everyone picked.
The host can tap Next question to move on. Otherwise the game moves on by itself after a few seconds.
Results and rematches
After the last question everyone sees the final table. The host can tap Play again to take the whole group back to the lobby with the same code, ready for another round with new questions. Tap Main menu to leave.
Good to know
- Refreshing is safe. If you reload the page in the same browser tab, you’ll drop straight back into your game.
- If the host leaves, another player automatically becomes host after about 30 seconds.
- If a player disconnects, the game doesn’t wait for them. Questions move on when the timer runs out.
- Games end automatically after a few hours without activity, and their codes stop working.
Scoring and winning
- One point for every correct call, whether it was a fib or a fact.
- No points are taken away for a wrong answer, so always have a guess.
- Online, an unanswered question scores nothing.
- The highest score wins. Equal scores share the place, and the game calls it a tie.
- Playing solo? You’ll get a rating at the end, from “Better luck next time” up to “Perfect score!”.
Keyboard shortcuts
On a computer you can play without the mouse:
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| ← Left arrow | Answer Fib |
| → Right arrow | Answer Fact |
| Enter | Next question (and Start or Join when you’re typing a name or code) |
Tips for spotting a fib
- Read the answer, not just the question. Fibs are often near-misses: the right kind of answer with one detail changed.
- Watch the numbers. A date that’s two years out or a count that’s one too many is a classic fib.
- Distrust “everybody knows”. On Hard, popular myths are often fibs, and the strangest-sounding answers are often facts.
- Online, answer early. The reveal comes as soon as everyone has answered, so don’t hold the room up. But don’t let the timer run out either.
Troubleshooting
“No game found with that code”
Check the code with the host. Codes never use the easily confused characters 0, O, 1 or I. A game also ends after a few hours without activity, so the host may need to create a new one.
“That game has already started”
Players can only join in the lobby. When the round finishes, ask the host to tap Play again, then join with the same code.
“That game is full”
Each online game has a player limit (normally eight). Start a second game with a different code, or wait for someone to leave the lobby.
The Start game button is greyed out
Online games need at least two connected players. Make sure your friend has joined and still has the page open; their dot should be green.
“Connection lost. Reconnecting…”
Your device briefly lost touch with the game. Keep the page open; it reconnects by itself. If it doesn’t, reload the page in the same tab and you’ll rejoin. Switching to a different app for a long time can also pause the connection on phones.
I closed the tab and lost my game
Rejoining works within the same browser tab. If you closed it, you can’t rejoin a game that’s already started, but you can join the next round when the host taps Play again.
I think an answer is wrong
